BRITISH RAILWAYS HIGH SPEEDS IN THE OPEN AND THROUGH TUNNELS

Aerodynamic tests have been carried out in the open as well as in a 1660 m long double track tunnel in connection with the forthcoming introduction of high speed multiple unit trains. The tests were carried out with the aid of two trains pulled by a normal electric locomotive, as well as by one fitted with a streamlined cowl, speeds of up to 176 km/h being maintained in the tunnel. The main results are briefly dealt with and it is concluded that no problems or difficulties of fundamental nature were encountered throughout the tests.
