THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF SAND MIXTURES FOR ASPHALTIC CONCRETE

The importance is recalled of the particle size distribution of the sand fraction during the manufacture of the bituminous mixture as regards workability and satisfactory compaction of the latter. In order to obtain a sand fraction situated in the Richardson Hexagon or Pentagon, it is necessary to accurately calculate the mixture of the various types of sand available. Examples are given and recommendations put forward to prevent any marked fluctuation in the voreall grading of this san fraction during manufacture. If a preliminary control is useful, it does not afford sufficient guarantee as regards the final exact grading and it must be completed with a control of the bituminous mixture at the time of the loading of lorries or discharge into the finisher. A rapid analysis of samples could enable possible modifications to be carried out during manufacture in order to guarantee the quality of the product on delivery. ;TRRL;
