STUDY OF SURFACING WEAR CAUSED BY STUDDED TYRES - LABORATORY TESTS

A traffic simulator, details of whic are given, was used to study tracking and resistance to wear of several types of surfacings used in Belgium on prefabricated samples or specimens obtained in-situ. On the simulator was mounted a tyre with 43 studs placed along 4 planes perpendicular to the axis of the wheel. A series of transverse profiles was impressed upon the sample. The following observations were made cement concrete has a highly satisfactory behaviour. Conventional asphaltic concrete and experimental gap-graded asphaltic concrete behave very satisfactorily, but the other types of asphaltic concrete have less resistance. In the case of surfacings containing resin, resistance to wear depends on the size of the chippings and the resin content of the mixture. ;TRRL;
