IS THE STEAM ENGINE A REALISTIC ALTERNATIVE?

AANGMOTORN AER DEN ETT REALISTISKT ALTERNATIV?

Saab-scania is studying alternative power plants for cars. One project concerns steam engines of modern advanced design. A steam generator delivers steam to a piston engine directly coupled to the wheels and to separate auxiliary machinery for pumps, electric generator and comfort functions. Exhaust steam is condensed and fed to the steam generator. Working pressure is 100 bar at 350 degrees c. The working medium is hermetically sealed. The heat exchanger of the generator contains 120 parallel tubes of 1 mm dia. With flue gas gaps of 1 mm. Nominal output is 0.6 mw, equivalent to max, continuous rating of 160 hp. The compact burner can run on fuel oil or other liquid or gaseous fuels. Maximum engine rpm is 3000 at 150 km/h, instantaneous hp then being 250. Condenser design permits large overloads on the engine. Water has been found the best medium. Freezing is avoided by an automatic heater device. Advantages of the system are extremely low pollution, excellent performance (system equivalent to 250 hp ic car engine, engine delivers full torque throughout), very short starting times, direct throttle response, low exhaust temperature and noise, no vibration, constant auxiliary function availability, lower weight, lower consumption in town traffic, possibility of using different fuels. /TRRL/
