EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF AN ARCH TO WHICH ADHERES A THIN PLATE

ANALISIS EXPERIMENTAL DE UN ARCO SOLIDARIO DE UNA LAMINA

A photoelastic method is used to analyze the behaviour of A 90 degrees circular axial arch, of rectangular cross-section, variable height and constant width, to which a thin plate is fixed in the soffit. Arch and plate are subjected to stresses. The maximum stress values are determined for arch in the arch-plate system and for the arch alone. Both values are compared. The conclusions reached are as follows: (1) the influence of the thin plate increases with its width until the latter is equal to eleven times the thickness of the arch; (2) the neutral fibre comes near the thin plate, which means that there is an increase in the extension of the tensile zone, although stresses remain very low because of the proximity of the fibre. For A plate eleven times thicker than the arch, the increase in the height of the tensile zone is 20%. /TRRL/
