After making some general comments on foundations and the relations between structures, foundations and the soil, the author studies site investigation, identification and test methods, shallow foundations, and determination of deformations and settlement. One chapter deals with the improvement of the geotechnical characteristics of the soil, another is concerned with deep foundations (piles and caissons). A study is made of slope stability and unsheeted excavations, earth dams, seepage and capillarity, excavations in compressible soil, peat blasting, lowering of the water table, retaining walls, quays and sea structures, sheeted excavations and anchorages, cofferdams and tunnels. The last chapter deals with soil vibrations in relation to the design of foundations and vibratory driving of piles. The first edition of this book was published in 1951 under the title: "soil mechanics, foundations and earth structures". /TRRL/
