EXPERIMENT ON A CONTROL STRUCTURE TO DETERMINE SOME SPECIFIC PARAMETERS OF LIMESTONE-SAND-BITUMEN MIXTURES

UNA EXPERIENCIA DE OBRA CONTROLADA PARAR FIJAR ALGUNOS PARAMETROS ESPECIFICAS DE LA MEZCLAS SWELO CALCAREO-ARENA-ASFALTO

It is proposed to determine experimentally a coefficient of equivalence of thicknesses between limestone-sand-bitumen mixtures and standard asphaltic concrete used in roadbases and to establish the relation existing between the initial density and the final density under traffic. The study was conducted on (1) an experimental road comprising 4200m long sections consisting of 2 layers 6cm thick, built with the mixture studied and compacted under different pressures and on (2) a 400m section comprising 2 asphaltic concrete layers 6cm thick compacted at 98% marshall. All sections were covered with an asphaltic concrete wearing course 5cm thick. Details are given of the tests, the results of which show the relation between density and modulus of deformation and gives the equivalence coefficient values. The following points are stressed: (1) as regards limestone-sand-bitumen mixtures, there exists an optimum compaction which must not be exceeded; (2) the thickness equivalence coefficient between the above mixture and standard asphaltic concrete is equal to 1.5.
