PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE OF SURFACINGS USING BITUMINOUS SLURRY

FOEREBUGGANDE BELAEGGNINGSUNDERHAALL MED BITUMINOEST SLAM

Apart from frost heave, most damage to surfacings is caused by winter traffic and snow clearance, sanding and salting. With the exception of damage due to road studs, much damage can be reduced or eliminated by using the new danish bituminous slurry for road maintenance. This is based on emulsion and contains mineral fill up to 2 mm plus a thixotropic medium to prevent sedimentation. Bituminous slurry requires no tack coat, nor rolling. Its primary action is sealing. Since snow melted by salt penetrates into the pavement and causes frost heave, slurry application will directly and indirectly counteract salt damage. Slurry needs two hours to 'break' and should be applied in warm dry weather. Application can be manual or mechanical. /TRRL/
