MOLECULAR WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION: THE KEY TO SUCESSFUL POLYMER PROCESSING

This article discusses the use of Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) to understand and predict the physical and processing characteristics of polymers. GPC characterizes a polymer by its Molecular Weight Distribution and separates a polymeric material into its individual components (polymers, oligomers, monomers, additives, and contaminats). Included in this article are an explanation of how GPC works, a list of the solvents that can be used, a description of the instrumentation employed, a description of the polystyrene gel-packed columns, a discussion of the single most important fundamental property of polymers which is their molecular weight distribution, and a discussion of the various applications of GPC.
