DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC BY RAIL BETWEEN ITALY AND THE OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES IN THE NEXT TEN YEARS, AND NEW SYSTEMS TO BE INTRODUCED TO MEET THIS DEVELOPMENT

The fact of having rediscovered the train as a reliable, economic and less polluting expedient (which has tended to make itself felt for some years as a result of road traffic congestion), also the immediate awareness of the seriousness of the situation, have accelerated approval of the programme of exceptional measures concerning the modernisation and increase in capacity of the FS network. This activity and programming at national level has now been repeated at international level, the purpose of which, in line with the definition of the "European master plan", is to set up a basic European network capable of providing competitive international links from the point of view of quality and quantity. If their fulfilment takes place within the time limits laid down, all these measures and programmes should be able to satisfy the traffic requirements in the near future in a rational and uniform manner, and thus encourage a balanced development in the European countries from the economic and social points of view, by giving a fresh impetus to the process of integration followed for more than ten years.
