In the course of installing welded rail, the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie was confronted with eight grade crossings in a 1 1/2-mile stretch. The goal was to produce a safe system that would not unduely delay vehicular traffic. Audiofrequency overlays of the conventional type would have been extremely complicated. The solution was installation of electronic movement detection through measurement of rail impedance changes. Several frequencies are overlapped for some distance beyond the crossings.
