TRAJECTORY PREDICTIONS FOR SHIPS PASSING CLOSE ABOARD IN SHALLOW WATER

A small vessel overtaking a large full ship is a highly dangerous maneuver. By including the effect of shallow water the situation is made worse. This is a study of the interaction forces between a small and a large ship. Potential theory is used to evaluate the forces and moments on two body of revolution ship models and two corresponding images. The force prediction model is then incorporated into a trajectory model. The safe passing distance for a small ship overtaking a large full ship is determined.
