BULK SHIPPING POOLS AND CONSORTIA

Co-operation between individual owners, either through membership of consortia or by the "pooling" of tonnage, is becoming increasingly common, ventures of this type being a response to marketing pressures, as well as the rising costs of building and operating bulk carriers and OBO's. There are Norwegian, Swedish, French, German, British and Spanish bulk pools in existence and the operations of these are evaluated to see how they differ and to what extent they are specialized. The reasons for the concentration of ownership or control are diverse, but the main factors are outlined in the report, reference also being made to joint ventures by the Japanese and other interests, as well as parallel developments in the liner, unit load and reefer sectors. That part of the world bulk carrier and OBO fleet operating within bulk pools and consortia is analysed by type, age, ownership, etc., the report containing detailed listing of the ships within each pool or consortia, including those which have been time chartered.
