AIR FREIGHT: CHALLENGE TO SHIPPING IN THE 70'S

Undertaken as a survey of existing data on transportation and commodity movements to show the current trends in air freight, but due to lack of a proper data base, it is only able to give a broad overview of the airline industry, where it has been, and where it is going. It represents an attempt to collect, correlate and compile data on air cargo movments and that of shipping in order to forecast future trends in the transportation of commodities. In particular, it attempts to show the correlation of air freight and shipping and possible areas of competition through the centers of New York, for foreign commerce, and Hawaii, on the domestic scene. Samples data from these two markets in order to demonstrate current trends and possible future forecasts of the competition between the air mode and the sea mode. It covers data compiled over the period 1960-1973, that being all that was available at the time. The final chapter summarizes the work that was done. It attempts to show where further research needs to be done, what other data needs to be collected. Briefly, it gives an overview of the present situation facing the air freight industry.
