EXPERIMENTAL OPTIMIZATION OF PROPELLER RUDDER ORIENTATION FOR MINIMUM VIBRATORY LOADING

A model test of a vibration problem, likely to occur on a ship, carried out at the M.I.T. propeller tunnel is described. The loads experienced by a rudder behind a propeller operating in a non uniform wake, were measured using a six-component unsteady state dynamometer. Various longitudinal and transverse positions of the rudder were examined, with the intention of finding its optimum location behind the propeller from the point of view of vibration. Variations in angle of attack were also investigated. The experiment is also used to demonstrate yet another use of the six-component dynamometer originally built to measure unsteady loads on a propeller. Care is taken in presenting the experimental procedure as clearly as possible, outlining the various problems encountered in this study, for the benefit of similar investigation in the future.
