Four main topics are discussed in the report: (1) knowledge of parameters influencing the tyre/pavement friction, e.g., road surface characteristics, macro and micro roughness, thickness of the film of water and therefore importance of surface drainage, and braking device characteristics with special interest in anti-locking devices permitting better vehicle handling in smergency maneuvers; (2) application of this knowledge to the construction of high-quality surfacings for roads and runways by means of practical recommendations and examples of well-adapted formulae, Measuring apparatus and of new high-output measuring equipment; (3) problem of the wear of surfacings by studded tires, which leads to an important economic loss and overall reduction in safety because of aquaplaning and the dynamic effect of tracking on vehicles. Improvements in formulae and equipment do however lead to a reduction in wear; (4) study of the eveness of surfacings by modern methods facilitating rapid high-output measurements. The latter are being used in the selection of laying methods, in the study of comfort and safety, and in the operation of the network.
