SWEDISH EXPERIMENTAL SAFETY VEHICLE PROGRAM. STEERABILITY DURING EMERGENCY BRAKING. MEASUREMENTS. TYRE - ROAD CHARACTERISTICS. LOW-FRICTION, VARIABLE-FRICTION, HIGH FRICTION

In order to obtain tyre data necessary for the computer simulation measurements of tyre-road characteristics were made on dry asphalt, sealed wetted asphalt and ice. The measurements were made with a mobile tyre tester consisting of a truck with a test wheel rig and a measuring hub mounted at its rear end. Two types of steel-belted radial tyres were used; one with summer profile was tested on all three surfaces, one with winter profile and studs was tested only on ice. The measurements were carried out by varying the longitudinal slip at different side slip angles, wheel loads, speeds and tyre pressures. The influence of the following parameters was investigated: speed, wheel load, inflation pressure (only on dry asphalt), wheel side slip angle. The results show that for the summer tyre speed and load variations have to be considered for all three surfaces when tyre characteristics are simulated. The influence of the tyre inflation pressure was very small. The winter tyre with studs showed low speed sensitivity on ice; the influence of wheel load is more important. The influence of ice temperature was large for the summer tyre but small for the winter tyre with studs. The influence of the side slip angle on the longitudinal and lateral friction number, versus longitudinal slip, was essentially of the same nature for both tyres on all surfaces. /TRRL/
