The article reviews the methods that are available for the limitation of traffic growth in cities. Some 35 methods are discussed which can be divided into three categories:- traffic restriction, in which legal or physical means are used to prevent certain travel desires; traffic restraint, in which certain travel desires are discouraged rather than prevented; and, traffic avoidance, in which action is taken to prevent the original travel desires from arising. Examples are given of a number of studies that indicate the effectiveness of the various methods of traffic limitation. /TRRL/
