THE HIGHWAY FACT BOOK

This publication which provides officials, journalists and researchers with up-to-date information on highway transportation, is organized to answer the most commonly asked questions on highway matters. The Federal government's involvement in the highway program is examined, and the need for road improvement is discussed. The organization of the road systems, the Federal-State highway program, the Highway Trust Fund for funding highways and mass transit, and the effect of inflation on highway modernization are considered. Environmental impacts, the relative energy efficiencies of various transportation modes, urban transportation, the movement of goods, the status of the Interstate Highway System, and the needs of the transportation disadvantaged are reviewed. Comments are also made on various aspects of highway accidents and highway safety.
