SPREADING AND COMPACTION OF THICK BITUMINOUS LAYERS

EL EXTENDIDO Y COMPACTACION DE CAPAS GRUESAS DE AGLOMERADOS

The use of thick bituminous layers offers an increase in monolithic characteristics, greater regularity, the possibility of working at lower temperatures, and a reduction in the number of laying operations. The main problems which remain to be solved in thick-lift construction are: differential compaction, insufficient compaction, and longitudinal joints. A new method is described for the transverse and longitudinal levelling of damaged pavements. The problems of spreading and compaction are studied, and mention is made of suitable equipment for this type of material together with the organization of In-situ Operations. /TRRL/
