SPATIAL ABSTRACTION IN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING: A REPORT ON THE PRELIMINARY STAGES OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT

RUIMTELIJKE ABSTRACTIES IN DE VERROERSPLANNING: VERSLAG OVER DE VOORDBEREIDENDE FASE VAN HET RESEARCH-PROJEKT

A progress report on the preliminary stages of a research project on spatial abstraction in transportation planning is presented. First, the major exploratory studies that have contributed to the problem analysis, and to the choice of the definite problem formulation and research approach, are summarized. They include literature studies and investigations of the applicability of graph theory, classification methodology and statistical decision theory to the subject. In a more detailed way, results of a study on goals in transportation planning are presented. Special attention is paid to the implications of the characteristics of these goals for the research problem. Then, the insights gained from these various studies have been used to set up A theoretical framework for the problem. One of the basic elements of this framework consists of a special conception of the nature of the transportation planning process of which spatial abstraction is a part. Another basic point is the conviction that the selection of the adequate level of spatial detail is part of a so called subplanning process concerning the adequate design-of-analysis of the alternatives. This framework leads to a number of theoretical and operational choices for the continuation of the project. The report concludes with a detailed list of the resulting problem statements that will be tackled in the near future. /TRRL/
