THE DISTRIBUTION OF AGGREGATES - ESTIMATES OF THE DIRECT COSTS OF ROAD HAULAGE

This paper discusses the estimation of the direct costs of the present arrangements for distributing aggregates by road in Great Britain, analysed by the region in which journeys start. The estimates are based on data obtained in the 1967/8 survey of the transport of goods by road together with rates of cost published by commercial motor. The total costs are found to be about found190M at 1973 rates. It is indicated that the costs would increase by about 60 per cent following a doubling in the lengths of journeys but would reduce by about 27 per cent if the productive utilization of the vehicles were to be raised from the current level of 58 per cent to 83 per cent. /Author/TRRL/
