FIELD TESTING OF AN ORTHOTROPIC BRIDGE

Field measurements of static live-load strains and deflections of an 88-ft 4-in. simple-span orthotropic- plate-deck bridge are compared with a theoretical analysis that represents the structure as a planar grid. Design values based upon the AISC design manual are evaluated. Test results show that the planar-grid analysis method is a reliable analytical tool for predicting stresses and deflections. Design procedures based upon the AISC manual give correct stress values at critical locations on the structure. However, the design estimate of plate deflection is conservative. /FHWA/
