VULNERABILITY OF ROAD USERS TO ACCIDENTS IN URBAN AREAS . NATIONAL TRANSPORT CONFERENCE; TRANSPORT FOR THE USERS; MELBOURNE, 23-25 MAY 1989; PREPRINT OF PAPERS
Urban areas and in particular local roads represent significant risks to road users. Accident statistics in the past have enabled the identification of dangerous road design features, improved vehicle safety and aided in modifying driver behaviour. Certain groups of road users are over represented in the accident statistics. These include young drivers and young passengers, cyclists, and both children pedestrians and aged pedestrians. Accident numbers alone are insufficient to investigate the problem and an assessment involving other factors including road user exposure, road characteristics, traffic characteristics and, not the least important, road user behaviour (a). For the covering record of the conference, see IRRD no 814837.
