CHARACTERISTICS OF BUSINESS TRAVEL IN THE SYDNEY CBD . NATIONAL TRANSPORT CONFERENCE; TRANSPORT FOR THE USERS; MELBOURNE, 23-25 MAY 1989; PREPRINT OF PAPERS

Sydney is the central business district of the nation, and the nation's largest employer. The concentration of employment, business, retail, and tourist activities generate various types of business travel. Business travel can be broadly identified as: pick up/delivery, employer's business and personal business. According to a survey undertaken in 1987, commercial vehicle traffic has increased by some 37 per cent between 1979 and 1987. Business vehicles, for example, deliveries, couriers etc represent at least a quarter of all daytime traffic in the city. The growth in business travel is expected to continue because of the flourishing development of major activities in the city of Sydney. This growth is reinforced with the provision of travelling assistance by employers, such as the use of company cars for private purposes. In assessing the aspects of traffic demand, investigation was given to trip generation and distribution rates, the availability of car parking facilities and the time of travel. It is revealed that business travel will continue to be a major activity in the CBD of the city. Sufficient and efficient access to the city will have to be provided to ensure business efficiency (a). For the covering record of the conference, see IRRD no 814837.
