BELGIAN EXPERIENCE WITH THE DESIGN AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF CONCRETE ROADS

Belgium began to build concrete roads in 1910 and possesses advanced techniques and technology in this field. This state of the art paper covers the following subjects: the defects of traditional concrete pavements with expansion joints; the structure of dowelled transverse contraction joints and anchored longitudinal joints; the advantage and main structure of continuously reinforced concrete pavement; some standard pavement structures designed according to the layered elastic slab theory; and the structure of concrete overlays on old pavements. Slip form pavers and methods of surface treatment are also discussed briefly. (a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD abstract no 823365.
