A DECOMPOSITION MODEL OF LOCAL TRANSPORT. TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT POLICY BETWEEN RURAL AND URBAN AREA, TO AN INTEGRAL APPROACH ON REGIONAL LEVEL. TRANSPORTATION PLANNING COLLOQUIUM 1989, THE HAGUE, NOVEMBER 30 - DECEMBER 1, 1989. VOLUME II

EEN DECOMPOSITIEMODEL VOOR STEDELIJK VERVOER

In city public transport, the stopping time makes up a considerable part of the total travel time. Thereby, the travel speed remains too low and is unacceptable to many people. For a radical improvement, an unorthodox approach looks appropriate: breaking up the transport lines in many direct connections, without intermediate stations. In this decomposition model, bus lines are mainly considered. However partial breaking up of tram connections is also possible. The potential advantages of this model are: higher travel speed, higher punctuality, reduction of waiting time, greater comfort, better adapting to travel demand, wider acceptance of the reservation of traffic space, less transfer and improvement of connections to external trips. The main disadvantage, from the behavioural point of view, is a generally lower frequency of departures on each separate connection. However, the hypothesis about passengers' behaviour is, that, within the elasticity of timing, the time gain will be given preference over the choice of departure time. The model is illustrated on the basis of transport situation in amsterdam.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 825702.
