TRANSFERIA. TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT POLICY BETWEEN RURAL AND URBAN AREA, TO AN INTEGRAL APPROACH ON REGIONAL LEVEL. TRANSPORTATION PLANNING COLLOQUIUM 1989, THE HAGUE, NOVEMBER 30 - DECEMBER 1, 1989. VOLUME I

TRANSFERIA

The need to decrease the use of private cars and, in connection with that, to promote a much higher use of public transport, is widely recognized. However, a large part of the present activity and trip pattern is not possible without the car, especially regarding the present town and country structure. Transferiums, (points of exchange between cars and the public transport system), make it possible to connect the two. By combining the advantages of both transport modes this combined use will result in many cases in the highest trip quality. The use of transferiums should not only be considered in the context of accessibility problems (reducing traffic jams). Environmental problems also require that total vehicle mileage be limited. Therefore, the problem has to be approached in a fundamental way from both the trip pattern and the characateristics of the two modes. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 825702.
