A ROAD FREIGHT SYSTEM USING STANDARD SWAP UNITS. ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN LAND TRANSPORT. PROCEEDINGS OF A SEMINAR ORGANISED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES, DIRECTORATE GENERAL FOR ENERGY, LUXEMBOURG, MAY 16-18, 1988

This paper describes and evaluates a consolidated road freight system which reduces transport costs, pollution, and vehicle mileage and saves energy. The basic idea behind the system is to combine the transport and storage function of containers by transporting freight in units of various standard sizes (swap bodies). Such units can be lifted without the use of complex equipment, and stored at the central depot. Here several such units can be conveyed in a single trailer with a maximum carrying capacity of 5 units, or be transported in smaller vehicles for distribution to narrow city centres, without the need to unload or repack the merchandise. The operation of the system is as follows: an empty unit is transported from the centre of orgin to the shipper for loading, and then returned to the centre in a later cycle. Here it is combined with other units into a "train shipment" for transportation to the centre nearest the receivers address. The units are then transferred to the receiver by an appropriately sized lorry. The empty units are then returned to the centre of origin for cleaning and reuse. Simulation of various trip organization scenarios are presented, and the vehicle mileage, energy consumption, transportation costs and exhaust emissions of each compared to those obtained using a conventional road transport system.
