THE EFFECTS ON ENERGY CONSUMPTION OF A CHANGE IN TRANSPORT MODE IN PASSENGER AND GOODS TRAFFIC. ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN LAND TRANSPORT. PROCEEDINGS OF A SEMINAR ORGANISED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES, DIRECTORATE GENERAL FOR ENERGY, LUXEMBOURG, MAY 16-18, 1988

This article describes a method of analysis for determining the effects on energy consumption of a change in transport mode. The method used is the macsim model, which is based on the line parameters of sections of road, rail or waterway and which takes into account the different road profile capacities. Individual driving cycles approximately corresponding to the standard driving cycles under the same boundary conditions are generated for each section. The number and intensity of accelerations and decelerations are calculated from the utilization of capacity, the profile type, and the average transport speed. Using a physically exact method which includes the gear changes, vehicle size classes, engine types and engine performance characteristics, and frictional and free wheel conditions between the vehicle and track, the fuel consumption and pollutant emission for these individual parametric vehicle specific driving cycles can be determined. For extrapolation in the macsim model, the total traffic sector is subdivided into numerous vehicle groups. With freight transport for example, the fuel consumptions of various types of lorry, bus, aircraft or barge are calculated separately. By taking into account the proportions of the total journey run required for pick up and delivery, this enables the specific energy consumption in combined road-water and road-rail transport to be given for different combined traffic techniques.
