MODELLING OF EMBANKMENTS ON NEAR SURFACE REINFORCED SOFT SOILS. NUMERICAL MODELS IN GEOMECHANICS. NUMOG III. PROCEEDINGS OF THE 3RD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM HELD IN NIAGARA FALLS, CANADA, 8-11 MAY 1989

A new model consisting of pasternak shear layers, winkler springs and a newly proposed rough membrane is presented in this paper in order to represent the mechanical response of a granular fill-geosynthetic-soft soil system. The model is analysed in two stages. The effects of the rough geofabric and its influence on the granular fill, on the overall settlement, are evaluated separately. Limited parametric studies bring out the influence of the extent of reinforced zone, shear stiffness of the granular fill, and the coefficient of friction of the geosynthetic, on the settlement of the soil and on the tension mobilised in the membrane.
