VISCOPLASTICITY AND VECTOR PROCESSING. NUMERICAL MODELS IN GEOMECHANICS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE 3RD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM HELD AT NIAGARA FALLS, CANADA, 8-11 MAY 1989

The development of so-called "supercomputers" and the concepts of vector and parallel processing are briefly reviewed in this paper. As minisupercomputers and superworkstations have become available at reasonable prices, their effective usage is of special interest to a wide group of researchers and engineers working with conventional finite element codes for geotechnical applications. Thus, in this paper attention is focused on the suitability of the viscoplastic algorithm for vector processors. A few proposals are made of how to improve the performance of existing codes. Future developments and research with respect to parallel computers are briefly commented. For the covering abstract of this conference see IRRD 824029.
