TRANSPORT DEMAND AND MINIMISATION OF ITS DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS IN THE FUTURE. ACADEMIC CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS OF INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION ON ROAD TRANSPORT, BEIJING, CHINA, 7-12 MAY 1989
Transport demand and planning are covered in general terms in this article. It concludes that while the infrastructure is close to saturation in the industrialised countries, the very large gap which exists between them and the less developed countries gives the latter the opportunity to adopt policies to minimise the worst side effects of present day technology as applied to transport. Some indication of the problems encountered and possible remedies are presented with some consideration of future technological developments which may reduce demand. (TRRL)
