ROAD SAFETY IN CHINA: LESSONS FROM OVERSEAS. ACADEMIC CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS OF INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION ON ROAD TRANSPORT, BEIJING, CHINA, 7-12 MAY 1989

Although the number of registered motor vehicles in the Peoples Republic of China was only 43675 million in 1985, its traffic accident fatality rate (per 10000 vehicles) is 50 times higher than that of the developed countries. Road accidents are estimated to have cost 786 million US$ in 1985 alone and this was equivalent to 0.4% of the country's gross national product in that year. Based on the recent assignment as an international bank for reconstruction and development (ibrd) funded road safety adviser in China, the author analyses the scale and nature of the problems in China, introduces the experiences of the more motorised countries in the OECD which have been particularly successful in improving road safety, and identifies the key features necessary to implement a successful road safety programme in China.
