Great economic efficiency has been obtained by studying the shipment of large and heavy prefabricated equipment to construction sites in the USSR over the last 10 years. The research mainly includes: efficiency studies; methods recommended to select rational shipment patterns; theory and techniques to compute the movement of vehicles carrying large and heavy loads; methods to evaluate the impact produced by these vehicles on road and other structures; the trends in this kind of transport; distribution of large and heavy equipment by transportation modes; new technology for the shipment, loading and unloading; and the standards pertaining to this kind of transportation. Recently, the research has been expanded to design a new family of lightweight vehicles of extra high capacity, etc. (TRRL)
