THE RESEARCH ON ULTRASONIC PULSE METHOD INSPECTING THE CAST-IN-PLACE PILE OF HIGHWAY BRIDGE. ACADEMIC CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS OF INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION ON ROAD TRANSPORT, BEIJING, CHINA, 7-12 MAY 1989

This paper presents the principles, apparatus, and operation of the ultrasonic pulse method for inspecting cast-in-place piles. The changes of transit time, amplitude (or attenuation) and wave form of the received signal when the ultrasonic pulse transmits a defective area are discussed, and a criterion to evaluate quantitatively the defects on the basis of a transit time -depth curve is suggested. It is the product of the slope of the transit-depth curve and the difference between the transit times of two adjacent measuring points. This criterion is able to evaluate the nature and the extent of the defects. If the criterion is combined with the amplitude -depth curve, it is possible to obtain a more accurate result. (TRRL)
