DEVELOPMENT OF A NATIONAL STANDARD

Following their introduction into the UK in 1973, the use of concrete blocks for paving has become widespread. Specifications for concrete blocks and their laying are as numerous as the authorities using them and work has been going on ever since to develop a standard specification. An account is given of the search for standards of durability, strength, skid resistance, colour, dimensions and materials. Difficulties have been encountered in achieving consistent results in testing and there have been problems in identifying tests which can apply to the range of shapes and finishes available. Details are given of the standards currently in general use and an indication given of the areas under review. British standards and a road note relating to concrete block paving and its laying are listed. (TRRL)
