THE HANNOVER-WUERZBURG RAILWAY

Three tunnels on the new hannover to wuerzburg line are briefly described. A link between southern and northern Germany built 80 years ago, the line has been completely rebuilt to take modern traffic. The escherberg tunnel is 2906m long through mottled sandstone and Tertiary clays. The rauheberg tunnel is 6475m long and passes through shelly limestone, mottled sandstone, red sandstone and sand and gravel. The dietershan tunnel is 7345m and passes through mottled sandstone. Tunnelling has been carried out in all three according to the new Austrian tunnelling method with some open pit work. Brief details are given of excavation work, support and lining installation. Details are also given of cross section areas excavated and depth of cover. (TRRL)
