SOFT GOING AT THURROCK

An account is given of the first major tunnelling contract on a new main sewer, the thurrock southern trunk sewer, which will link the tilbury sewer works to West thurrock. The 2.14m diameter crunchingmole (tcm 2140) is jacked in front of 1800mm steel-collar jointed reinforced concrete pipes later to be lined with 1600mm grp pipes designed to cope with corrosive effluent. Three drives are involved of 360 -370m and a record 487m in length. Unexpectedly soft, sticky clay has been encountered below tilbury marshes which has caused unusual steering behaviour. Details are given of how this problem is overcome by using the whole shield for steering reaction instead of just the front section. Despite the soft ground jacking forces along the route of up to 600t are described. Also outlined is the slurry system which uses a caviem super-blayais unit and shotcrete backfilling using an aliva 250 dry-mix unit. (TRRL)
