DEVELOPMENT OF A KNOWLEDGE-BASED SYSTEM FOR THE SELECTION OF GROUNDWATER CONTROL METHODS

This paper discusses the development of a knowledge-based system for the selection of groundwater control methods using prolog. Most of the information contained within the system is taken from ciria report 113: control of groundwater for temporary works (see IRRD 803108). The data extracted from the report, and the method used for ranking and weighting such information is discussed. Details of the prolog software are also provided as are examples of consultations with the system. The system has been assessed by case study comparisons in which a number of case studies involving groundwater control methods were selected from the literature. The correlation between knowledge based system recommendations and the methods actually employed is good. (TRRL)
