LANES FOR BUSES AND CARPOOLS . CONFERENCE PAPERS ON THE WORKING DAYS ON TRAFFIC ENGINEERING 1989
BUS-CARPOOLSTRATEN
Traffic congestion on motorways can be reduced by increasing the use of public transportation and car pooling. This change in modal choice can be achieved by offering car pools and buses a separate lane on which congestion on regular lanes can be avoided and travel times can therefore substantially be reduced. In consequence of the increase in the use of car pools and buses, the total vehicle volume decreases while the total number of trips per person will remain constant or will increase. By guiding the travel behaviour, the number of cars can be reduced without affecting accessibility. (TRRL)
