CRUSHING COMPACTION

This article describes some new solutions to the search for cheap materials devised by contractors rebuilding the M5 motorway in South West England. In spring 1988, a parker 36/24 crusher was used in the successful reconstruction on the taunton bypass during a tight 8-week reconstruction schedule. A year later, it was being used near junction 12 in the neighbourhood of gloucester. Redland aggregates, the main contractor of the latter project, chose to crush the flexible blacktop materials of the original pavement and use them as a capping layer, covered by imported stone from nearby quarries. This seems to have been the first time that this process was used on a motorway in England. The article discusses some of the problems encountered in this generally successful operation, and lists some of the equipment used. Finally, it indicates some of the remaining work needed on the long-term maintenance of the M5.
