DRIVES - A LOW-COST RETROFITTABLE MODULE FOR ENHANCED VEHICULAR SAFETY AND DRIVER INFORMATION

This paper describes an ongoing applied research project codenamed drives (for driver's route information and vehicular enhancement for safety) which has the primary objective of developing a prototype low-cost electronics module for retrofitting on vehicles. Developmental work in four main areas is required: sensing equipment and circuitry; microprocessor-based system development; software development (both for the sensing functions and for route-planning); and, overall retrofit product design. Two approaches were adopted for the preliminary software design: the algorithmic thrust which seeks to reduce memory requirements for a minimum-set database, and the artificial intelligence thrust which attempts to provide a more flexible software system with minimal programming, or reprogramming as the database changes. Although much more remains to be done, the authors believe that there are interesting features to be shared at this stage of the project.
