LIMIT EQUILIBRIUM DESIGN METHODS FOR FREE EMBEDDED CANTILEVER WALLS IN GRANULAR MATERIALS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS

This paper reviews the routine design of free embedded cantilever walls in granular material using limit equilibrium methods. A large number of methods described in the literature are compared both with each other and with the limited experimental data that exists. Methods which are capable of providing good estimates of equilibrium and failure depths of penetration, as well as maximum bending moment, are then identified. Practical difficulties in the selection of design parameters for use in these methods are also discussed.(a)
