THE EFFECT OF LEG PROTECTING FAIRINGS ON THE OVERALL MOTION OF A MOTORCYCLE IN A GLANCING IMPACT

The present paper discusses preliminary modelling studies of the effect of leg fairings on the overall motion of a motorcycle in a glancing impact. Simple two-dimensional computer simulations are made of a motorcycle running into a flat rigid barrier inclined at an angle to its original direction of travel. Translational and rotational displacements of the centre of gravity are derived and compared with results from full scale crash tests. Different sizes of motorcycle are considered, with and without leg protecting fairings. This study is part of a continuing programme of testing and simulation directed at reducing motorcycle injuries in accidents. The two-dimensional models are a stage in the development of more comprehensive three-dimensional models. They are sufficiently accurate to reproduce variations in behaviour of the motorcycles and to indicate which parameters are most important, but this is a preliminary stage of the modelling programme and as yet no attempt is made to simulate accurately any specific motorcycle. Since the tests discussed here were completed a further major programme of tests has taken place and results from both these and further computer models will be published in due course.
