1988 IHT/MOBILE ROAD SAFETY AWARDS. AWARD WINNER: GLASDON UK

This article describes chevroflex, a flexible chevron sign system, designed to reduce road accidents which occur at sharp bends and on roundabouts. Chevroflex comprises a series of curved flexible uprights inserted into a bank of linked sockets, dug into a narrow trench in the ground. Collectively this band of uprights form a chevron or a series of chevrons with high visibility, which is an important safety feature. Chevroflex is constructed of plastic ultraflex, ennabling the sign to flatten backwards on vehicle impacts of up to 50 mph, and to spring back upright as soon as the vehicle has passed over it. This is a major safety feature, as conventional chevron signs can cause injury to vehicle occupants when hit, due to the use of rigid materials. Chevroflex is simple to install for skilled and unskilled operatives, and measures to counteract vandalism are incorporated into the design. The first test installation was made in March 1985, and currently there are over 500 installations at UK accident blackspots.
