ON-STREET PARKING IN BELFAST
The reintroduction of controlled pay and display parking in belfast in late 1987, after on street parking had been discontinued for security reasons since 1972, and the several years of preparation and planning involved are described by the author in detail. Installation and related aspects such as signing and promotion are covered, and there is an account of some of the problems experienced in running the scheme, such as excess charge administration, graffiti and their prevention, and machine malfunctioning. Turnover of spaces is around 4.6 per day and net income from 48 machines is over 2000 per week; this will allow the scheme to pay for itself in under 70 weeks.
