THE DEPRECIATION OF MOTOR VEHICLES IN NEW ZEALAND. FINAL REPORT

This report was produced in order to improve methods of estimating vehicle operating costs in New Zealand. It covers the following subjects: 1) equations for predicting the rate of depreciation as a factor of vehicle age for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, medium and heavy commercial vehicles; 2) time instability of depreciation; 3) advantages of the economic technique over the replacement value technique in estimating depreciation; 4) allocation of depreciation between time and distance; 5) lack of variation in depreciation cost with location; 6) impracticability of calculating the effect of operating conditions on depreciation; 7) advantage of using capital recovery technique rather then straight line technique for predicting depreciation costs (formulae are presented for passenger cars, light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles, buses and trailers), and 8) calculation of interest costs to give the opportunity cost of ownership.
