MANUAL FOR CONDITION RATING OF GRAVEL SURFACE ROADS
Most highway authorities use roadway surface condition ratings to judge the roadway's ability to continue providing required service to the public. Municipalities in Ontario have the same duty to monitor and maintain roads in their respective communities. Riding quality and distress manifestations are the basis of the condition rating scheme used in Ontario by the Ministry of Transportation. However, a scheme is required that specifically addresses the unique conditions and needs for gravel roads. This document was prepared to meet this roadway management need and to present a roadway condition rating scheme for gravel surface roads for the ministry which is also suitable for adaptation by municipalities in Ontario.
