EXPERIENCE WITH TROXLER 3411-B DURING COMPACTION MEASUREMENTS

ERFARING MED TROXLER 3411-B VED KOMPRIMERINGSMAALINGER

Examples are given of the use of the troxler 3411B compaction measuring equipment used in Sweden between 1981 and 1984 at a number of sites including pedestrian/cycle track and roads. Comparisons are made between this troxler 3411b isotope measuring equipment, and volumetric weight measurements as well as plate-loading equipment. Results showed reliable good agreement with volumetric weight measurements and with plate-loading measurements of bearing capacity in fairly coarse gravel/sand. The instrument was seasonally priced and well suited to field measurement. It was not suitable for compaction measurements of fairly coarse gravel and other materials with a large stone content. It was found that troxler measurements were limited to a depth of 30 cms in soil layers. Alternative measurement methods investigated indicated that plate-loading equipment was costly, time consuming but reliable. The sand/water volume meter was not suitable for field measurement, but levelling was acceptable for the measurement of the compaction of stony materials.
